Social Work Job Vacancies in Wirral

Wirral is a wonderful place to live and work. Bordering the River Mersey, the Irish Sea and the River Dee, the Merseyside borough offers plenty of history, culture, countryside and outdoor sports and adventures. Thanks to its peninsula location, Wirral has quiet sandy beaches, lush country parks (like Birkenhead Park, which inspired New York’s Central Park) and off-shore islands inhabited with rare marine wildlife.

For the history buffs, the Birkenhead Priory, the oldest building on Merseyside, the 19th century Port Sunlight Museum and Garden Village and the U-Boat Story, a historic World War II ship-turned-interactive museum, are all worth a visit. The borough is also a golfing hotspot, boasting over 14 beautiful golf courses. Wirral is easy to reach from Liverpool and Chester via bus and rail.

In addition to offering its constituent with a range of excellent services, Wirral Council’s main aims are to drive economic growth, protecting its most vulnerable residents and improve the local environment.

Wirral Council’s main Social Services include:

Child Protection: Where members of the public can report children who they believe are suffering from harm, abuse or neglect, and ensure that at-risk children will receive the safeguarding and support they desperately need. While improvements can still be made, a recent Ofcom inspection found that “the quality of services for children has improved in all areas since the last inspection in 2016.”

Fostering: Where potential foster parents can learn about what it takes to become a foster parent, apply to become a foster parent, and receive support and guidance from Wirral Council, including training, peer mentoring and financial support.

What process do you use to select social workers for positions?

When it comes to selecting a social worker, our process at Portman Recruitment is bespoke. Why? Well, all applicants are different and it depends on what strengths and previous experience the candidate has under their belt.

Experience is, of course, important but here at Portman Recruitment, we think it’s as important to ask the candidate what they are looking for. In our experience, some candidates may be looking for something exciting to expand their social work knowledge. Whereas others may be looking for more of the same because it suits their work-life balance.

Our consultants’ job is to make sure that their candidate’s CV is optimised so that people at Wirral Council will pick them for the job! The majority of social workers that we speak to know what they’re looking for. We’ll then go out and speak to clients before making our social workers aware of the jobs that are available that match their criteria.

Local Authorities like Wirral Council state that they’re looking for social workers that have at least 2/3 years post qualifying experience. Sometimes, however, depending on the need, some will consider social workers with 12 months experience.

Wirral Council offers 45p per mile for mileage and 36.5-hour contracts.

Our team works extremely hard to create a culture where our social workers feel comfortable picking up the phone and giving us a ring. We’re not interested in how long you’ve been at the job, you’re still a part of the portman family. So, if you have an issue at work then please call your dedicated consultant. We want to hear from you so that we can solve the problem while putting a plan in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

This recruitment company was founded on an ‘above and beyond’ ethos. This belief ensures that we stand out from our competitors and can offer our social workers a fantastic experience.

From curating a CV to make it as relevant as possible, giving our social workers the best chance to land a role or helping them with any questions, queries or concerns. Our talented team of consultants do our utmost to help our social workers.

Our support doesn’t end there. Once you’ve got an interview, we help with techniques to make sure you feel comfortable before and during. After, we’ll follow up after with updates on the status of your job application.

We’re proud of the high level of service that we offer. From the moment social workers come into our Manchester-based office, they can see just how different things are, how supportive and understanding we are. Our social worker comes first, always. We care deeply about them and take pride in seeing them succeed. One of our aims is to build a fantastic working relationship with all our clients. Social workers who have left us for a more permanent role frequently get in touch with us and vice versa to let us know how they are getting on. We’ll always try to go and see candidates and clients too.

All social workers working with Portman Recruitment will be paid weekly via the payroll company that they requested. We also have an in-house PAYE scheme should someone want to use that.

Since its formation in 1973, Wirral Council has been providing the people of Wirral with excellent social services, bin collection and other community initiatives like libraries. Living and working in the Wirral puts you at the heart of a tight-knit community. Our amazing team offers an incredibly high level of service. Our transparent way of working is loved by our candidates. We understand that a social workers job is hard enough as it is which is why we’ll always have your back.
